Aptos Rio Del Mar Whole House Remodel
Exterior Makeover Magic
This project started as an exterior makeover. There was a rotted deck over the garage that was failing and dangerous. After finding no moisture barrier between the old T-111 wood siding and framing we decided to use the existing siding as sheathing for the new exterior layer.
Due to the mass of the structure, we decided to use two different materials to add visual interest and proportion to the large surfaces of the front and sides of the house. We used stucco on the first floor and horizontal lap siding for the top story. We also came up with a custom trim design that added a nice touch to frame the windows and doors.
In addition, we reworked the driveway area to allow for more parking and added a rock façade to dress up the retaining walls.
Creating a Great Room Open Space
We then turned our attention to the interior. Inside the house, the entrance, kitchen, dining room and living room were all separated by small doors that made the house feel small and cramped. We took out those doors and increased the size of the openings to create more of a great room feeling for the living areas of the house.
Consitentcy in Design Details
We also came up with a built up trim design that resembled the exterior to add a nice element of continuity. To make the new design consistent throughout, we wrapped the rough-sawn beams and open ceiling areas with a trim detail to match the rest of the interior and built a new custom fireplace surround with granite and wood trim to match.
